Italy To Deport Algerian Illegal Immigrants Within 4 Months
The Italian government officially classified Algeria as a safe country in addition to a number of countries, such as Tunisia, Morocco, and Senegal, which will result in an immediate and rapid deportation of Algerian illegal immigrants who will no longer benefit from the right of asylum or integration within the framework of residence in this European country.
These measures will make homosexuality the only case of asylum or residence because of allegations of persecution in Algeria and Tunisia.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said in a statement on Friday that he had signed the decree on the deportation of illegal immigrants, which includes the classification of a number of African and European countries as safe countries, and therefore will not exceed the period of deportation of illegal immigrants from these countries 4 months at the latest.
According to the Italian official, the decree includes the designation of 12 countries as safe areas that have been implemented by the Foreign Minister, Interior and Justice Ministers, namely Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cape Verde, Ghana, Kosovo, Northern Macedonia, Senegal, Serbia, and Ukraine.
Italian Foreign Minister explained that a 50 million-euro fund has been launched to speed up the deportation of Algerian illegal immigrants and others from the list of safe countries.
“The period of deportation can now be up to 4 years and will be reduced by the decree to a maximum of 4 months”.
Asked about so-called persecutions and human rights violations against homosexual migrants from Algeria and Tunisia, the Italian Minister replied that these cases are covered by Italy’s laws and constitution, which means that opening access to residency or asylum for illegal immigrants from Algeria and Tunisia requires a file that the person is persecuted in his/her country for being homosexual or LGBT.
According to Italian statistics, the number of illegal immigrants who arrived on its coasts, whether from Lampedusa from Libya or directly towards Sardinia, has approached 2000 since the beginning of this year, especially with the doubled sailing operations during the last summer and September.
