Khartoum is Arab world's most expensive city, Tunis cheapest
Sudan’s capital Khartoum is the Arab world’s most expensive city for expatriates and the world’s 26th, according to the global annual survey on the cost of living by Mercer.
- Djibouti is second, while Beirut in third place, outranks Abu Dhabi, followed by Dubai, Amman, Riyadh and Algiers. Tunis is the least expensive Arab country, according to the survey.
- Tokyo is the world’s most expensive city for expatriates, followed by Luanda, Angola, according to Mercer’s latest Cost of Living Survey.
- Osaka is in third position, up three places from last year, while Moscow in fourth is the most expensive city in Europe for expatriates while Macedonia, is the least expensive. Karachi ranked 214 is the world’s least expensive city, according to the survey.
- Recent economic and political events around the world affected the rankings for many regions through currency fluctuations, inflation, and volatility in accommodation prices.
- The covers 214 cities across five continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.
- The cost of housing is also included and, as it is often the biggest expense for expatriates, it plays an important part in determining where cities are ranked.
- New York is used as the base city and all cities are compared against it. Currency movements are measured against the US dollar.
