Leekens in Gabon 2017

Algeria coach Georges Leekens Tuesday gave explanations about his resignation decision as his players had failed in the African Cup of Nations.

“Due to big pressures on the Algerian Football Federation and the national team, I preferred to resign. I respect the Federation’s president Mohamed Raouraoua. I made the decision to leave the team and I am very sad. I hope that the players succeed in the next official competitions to make the Algerian people happy,” said Leekens.

This comes as the 67-year-old Belgian coach could not win with the national team in four official matches (Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Senegal).

He has been Algeria coach for three months only. This shows instability which was behind the declining level and results of the national team.

The Algerian Football Federation will start looking for a new coach once again. A first official game is expected to be played in June. Algeria will receive Togo as part of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers 2019 in Cameron.

Algeria may also play a friendly match in March.
