Many delegations attending the 13th session of the Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group on Algeria hailed its active role in the protection and the promotion of human rights, and praised it for the efforts made since the first UPR in 2008.

Speaking during the general debate, following the presentation of Algeria’s report under UPR process, the delegations underlined the of lifting the state of emergency, the strengthening of democracy in Algeria, the increase in women’s representation in elected assemblies, especially with the election of 146 women deputies at the People’s National Assembly (Lower house of Parliament).

They also underlined Algeria’s cooperation with human rights mechanisms and the measures taken for the protection of children, and recommended strengthening the economic, social and cultural rights.

In response to the recommendations made during the debate, Medelci pointed out that Algeria’s “commitment” to cooperate with universal mechanisms has been extended to African regional human rights mechanisms, citing the visits of two delegations of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in December 2009 and 2010.

“These visits are to be added to Algeria’s regular presentation of national periodic reports to the African Commission,” Medelci said.

“When we talk about Algeria, we can not forget the huge progress it has made so far, and we can not forget that Algeria made this progress just after it went through a painful decade that have greatly affected the Algerian people,” the minister added.
