Major General Abdelghani Hamel, Director General of National Security (DGSN), has brought into focus the spirit of professional responsibility and professionalism that characterized the police forces in the eastern province of Bejaia, while responding to the violent skirmishes the region has witnessed recently.

DGSN Chief Hamel said, according to a statement from the Directorate General of National Security, of which “Echorouk” has a copy, that that proximity work is very important and must be strengthened through various security-related tasks to be carried out daily by the police services.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring the maintenance of public order, without any violation of human rights and the laws of the Republic, as well as the implementation of the leadership’s regulations and instructions and securing the involvement of the citizens themselves in the bolstering of national security for the benefit of all and sundry.

Security could not be guaranteed “without respect for human rights and freedoms,” underlined the Director-General of National Security, Abdelghani Hamel.

He further highlighted the role of the police in ensuring and defending security and in strengthening links with all segments of society.

The DGSN Directorate’s statement also confirmed the injuries sustained by 39 policemen, who have sacrificed their lives while performing their bounden duties for the protection of persons and public and private property in riot-beset Bejaia, while paying a warm tribute to the civil society organizations and the well-meaning and law-abiding citizens of Bejaia who have in turn contributed to the putting out of the “fire of turmoil and sedition” in this eastern region of Algeria.
