MSP Movement leader Abderrazak Makri and the head of the “UDS” party Karim Tabbou have been engaged in a lively exchange via social networks and the media for several days now.
It all started with the recent statements by the MSP President on the “participation” of the head of the UDS (Democratic and Social Union, not approved) in the 2017 local elections.
“Tabbou came to my office and told me that he was secretly participating in local elections with lists of free candidates in some wilayas or provinces of the country. Witnesses can attest to that. I told him that it is not normal for him to denounce the 2017 local elections and at the same time participate in the elections. In a meeting with personalities, I called him to remind him of this by saying that we publicly assume our participation in the elections, we do not do it in secret,” Abderrazak Makri said Saturday, June 1 in El Oued, south-eastern Algeria.
Reacting to these remarks, Karim Tabbou accused the latter of shirking the issue saying: “We did not table at all any independent lists in the 2017 parliamentary elections.”
Makri’s reply on Facebook: “What Tabbou told me is that he was participating in local elections, not in the legislative elections”. “We are utterly surprised by Tabbou’s attacks on parties that participate publicly in the elections when he took part in the local elections without informing public opinion and dealt with the issue at the local level so that his contradictions did not appear. There is no difference between participation in legislative or local elections since they are organized by the same regime,” he underlined.
Returning to the charge, the MSP president Makri accused Tabbou on Monday of obstructing “the democratic transition” by entering “into partisan, political and ideological competition before its time”.
“Shifty Tabbou knows that he is not a challenge to us or a competitor. We have not stopped providing assistance to the new political forces that are asking for it (…) When we participated with our leaders and activists in the march on the first Friday, February 22, 2019, Tabbou was abroad weaving contacts with foreign circles, and today he is trying to ride the popular wave by attacking dignified and honorable people,” Abderrazak Makri argued to this effect.
