Foreign Minister, Mourad Medelci has met in Cairo with Executive Head of the National Transitional Council (NTC), on demand of the latter, said spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Amar Belani on Monday.

Mr Belani told APS that: “I confirm that at the sidelines of the meeting of the Arab League Council in Cairo, Mr Mourad Medelci held discussions with M Mahmoud Djibril, Executive Head of the NTC, on demand of the latter.”

“The two officials discussed developments in Libya, the conclusion drawn up by the latest meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council devoted to the Libyan issue,” Mr Belani said, adding: “Medelci  stressed on the necessity of safeguarding the unity of the brotherly Libyan people, and restore peace through a pacific, inclusive and democratic transition.”

The official further specified that several other meetings have already taken place in other capitals, at the sidelines of international conferences, adding that Algeria Foreign Ministry announced in March that contact cannels have already been established with some representatives of the NTC.

Since the outbreak of the armed conflict in Libya, relations between the Algerian government and the NTC underscored a degree of tension.

The rebels in Libya have been keeping accusing Algeria of providing military support to the regime of Gaddafi.

So far, Algeria has been refuting such accusations and still has not recognised the NTC nor demanded the departure of the Libyan dictator.

On Saturday, Algeria Foreign Ministry has denied report that a convoy of six Mercedes cars had crossed its border from Libya.

Egypt’s state MENA news agency had quoted a source from the rebel Military Council in the border city of Ghadames as saying the convoy of armored cars, which likely carried Muammar Gaddafi and his sons, crossed the frontier on Friday morning protected by the commander of a desert nomadic military unit that had operated under Muammar Gaddafi.
