Messahel discussed the Libyan crisis with Kadhafi’s envoy

The envoy of Libyan leader Muaamar Kadhafi has met on Thursday in Algiers with Foreign Minister for Maghreb and African Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, to discuss the situation in the troubled Libya.

  • Mr Amrane Aboukraa arrived on Wednesday evening to Algiers, coming from Tunisia. He will visit Morocco and Mauritania later, as part of a Maghreb tour to inform officials of these countries about the developments in Libya.
  • A statement of Foreign Ministry said “the Libyan envoy has highlighted the developments in Libya since the outbreak of the crisis there”, adding: “the talks have been extended to share opinions on efforts to reach a solution based on a cease fire, and then launch a dialogue between disputing parties to respond to legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people and uphold their sovereignty and the safety of their lands.”
  • The statement further specified that the two parties discussed the peace road map proposed by the African Union, and which has been exposed to the disputing parties in Libya by the AU mediators.
  • However, Algeria has been subject to accusations from the rebels in Libya, represented in the national transitional council, of sending mercenaries to fight with Kadhafi forces. Algeria has recurrently denied such accusations, which Foreign Ministry described as “irresponsible and unfounded allegations”.
  • On another side, Secretary General of the National Liberation Front (FLN), Abdelaziz Belkhadem has slammed chief of the national transitional council, Mustapha Andul Jalil, who repeatedly accused Algeria of being involved in mercenary operations there.
  • Belkhadem told a TV programme on Wednesday: “The one who uttered such allegations has to ablute before mentioning the name of Algeria.”
  • Mr Belkhadem has further added “Algeria fought the NATO and history is here to testify, while the national transitional council has recommended the help of the NATO to kill their brother Libyans.”
