Messahel To Meet In Berlin With UN Envoy For Western Sahara

Foreign Affairs Minister Abdelkader Messahel will visit Berlin on Thursday, where he will hold talks with Horst Kohler, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, as part of the UN Security Council’s mandate, said Wednesday a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As a recall, Mr. Kohler was received by the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and had talks with Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia and the Foreign Minister Messahel during his tour of the region undertaken last October. the same source added.

The ongoing consultations are within the framework of the implementation of the resolutions of the Security Council and of the United Nations in general for the decolonization of Western Sahara by enabling the Saharan people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and independence.

During his visit to the Sahrawi refugee camps in October 2017, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Horst Kohler, expressed optimism about the future of negotiations within the framework of the UN plan for the settlement of the  long-running Western Sahara conflict.
