Michael Mewshaw’s book contains lies, says US embassy to Algeria

US embassy in Algeria said it has no comment about statements mentioned in Michael Mewshaw’s book citing former charge d’affaires at the embassy Thomas Daughton.

  • Ambassador David D. Pearce told Echorouk Daughton is not working here to talk for himself but we called him. He denied all what was said in the book which contains many wrong quotations.
  •  The US give big importance to their relations with Algeria and they work on enhance them in all the sectors. Because of that, anything suggesting something different does not reflect the value given by the US government to those important bilateral relations, said the Ambassador.
  • Mewshaw’s book untitled ‘Between Terror and Tourism: An Overland Journey Across North Africa’ gives a depressing image about Algeria’s political and economic situation. He said those information came from former charge d’affaires at the US embassy in Algeria Thomas Daughton.
  • The book triggered criticism pushing Daughton to say he did not meet Mewshaw inside the embassy to talk about Algeria’s political and security situation before the 2009 presidential elections.
  • The release of the book comes to show that there is tension between the two countries following Algeria’s inclusion in the list of countries subjected to additional security measures in US airports. Algeria denounced the decision and considered it a decline in the relations between Algiers and Washington.
