The defense lawyers of the former CEO of the Italian energy company “Eni”, Paolo Scaroni, now on trial, has refused the referral to Algerian security and judicial reports against their client, arguing that the relevant documents were issued by “foreign entities and a foreign state”, as they put it.

They thus stressed in their arguments that there is no consensus among the parties concerned on the use of these reports during the Milan trial.

This rejection came in an audio recording of an hour and 13 minutes during a hearing of the “Saipem-Eni-Sonatrach” corruption and bribery scandal at the Court of Milan, Italy on Monday 6th February 2017 and of which “Echorouk” possesses a copy.

In the voice recordings, the lawyer Fulvio Simone of the defense team of Paolo Scaroni, expressed firm opposition to the using by the court of “a DVD 0.3,” containing such reports worked out by the Algerian security and judicial services, arguing that the latter would be detrimental to their client’ interests as they stemmed from foreign quarters.

Such reports were drafted in Arabic and then translated into Italian.

The lawyer added that the defense rejects the adoption and use of these documents and reports against their client, Paolo Scaroni, pointing out that they might adopt and accept the use of these fact-finding documents issued by a foreign state, in only a single case that is the presence of a consensus on this contingency among all the parties at issue.
