A joint commission between higher education and health ministries is expected to be held in September to examine Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal’s recent instruction to ban hospital teachers’ retirement.

Representative of hospital teachers and professors’ union Rachid Belhadj said no one can work forever and the Algerian legislators should set a law to limit retirement age.

“If hospital teachers are retired. We can benefit from their experience. Retirement is their right,” he added.

Prime Minister Sellal gave an instruction to the health and higher education ministers to ban retirement for hospital teachers who are 70. Before that, he ordered them to allow retirement for more than 100 professors who are more than 65. This decision was supposed to be applied in June. Yet, Sellal cancelled it as many unions intervened to ban retirement. Unions were divided between members who are for this decision and those who are against it.
