More than 1 million children do not go to school in Algeria

More than 1 million Algerian children have not been sent to school while 300,000 schoolboys work in holidays and 500,000 pupils quit school annually and become delinquent, said chief of national organisation for health promotion and research development Mustapha khyati.

  • “A total of 100,000 children do not go to school every year especially in southern Algeria where 30 percent of girls can not go to school because of bad weather conditions and local traditions,” he told Echorouk.
  •
  • He also said crowded classes will have a negative impact on the pupils and teachers in terms of pedagogy.
  •
  • “The education ministry wants to keep 40 individuals in one class. That would affect the pupils’ performance.”
  •
  • “Long hours of class and heavy school programs will make children afraid and thinking of quit school,” he added.
  •
  • Studies conducted by the same organisation show that teachers have become more nervous and violent against their pupils because of the heavy school programs.
  •
  • A total of 40 percent of pupils were kicked out from class and beaten by their teachers, according to the same source.
  •
  • 20 percent of six-year-old children per year do not go to school
  •
  • Chief of Algerian Association for Literacy Aicha Barki said 20 percent of children per year do not go to school.
  •
  • Figures show that 7.73 percent of pupils quit school every year while the education ministry had announced earlier that more than 8 million children joined the Algerian schools.
