More than 300 Euros per month to feed cats and dogs

Pets’ food products’ sales shrank drastically in the Algerian market to an extent that some pets’ owners found tremendous difficulties to acquire food for their cats and dogs.

  • Some link this explain this scarcity to the global economic crisis including firms specialized in the production and packing of these products. Algeria has imported more than 1.53 tons of pets’ food with a value of more than $ 853 thousands over the year 2008.

  • More than 86 tons of cats and dogs’ food amounting to $ 374 thousands have been imported during the first semester of the year 2009. Economists’ forecast further shrink in the import of this kind of products during this year in comparison to the last one, causing prices’ soar in return.
  •  Some families struggled hard to find foods for their beloved pets, an investigation carried out by “Echourok” in some posh compounds of Algiers like Hydra, Ben Aknoun and Cheraga, revealed that a four kilogram pack of dogs’ food reached the awesome amount of 50 Euros . “Friskies” remains the most prized brand imported generally from Spain, Germany and France.

  • An old woman has declared that she spent approximately 300 Euros per month for the treatment and food of her “Rare French” cat “FIFI”, adding that she cannot afford leaving her cat without her favourite food.

  • Another one, ironically declared, that while some people had to look in litter bins to eat, privileged cats and dogs feed themselves in trendy shops.
