More than one million jobless in Algeria: survey

A total of one million and 196 thousands active people are jobless in Algeria out of 10 million and 315 thousands, a new survey finds.

• “Some 56.6 percent of the active people work in the commerce sector especially trade and public services,” said the survey conducted by the National Office of Statistics.
• “More than 5.2 million Algerians work as tradesmen or civil servants for a living followed by construction sector with 17.2 percent, agriculture with 13.7 percent and industry sector with 12.5 percent,” it added.
• The same survey shows that 75 percent of jobless people in Algeria are under 30 while 87.8 percent are between 30 and 35 years old.
• Jobless women represent 25.8 percent while working women represent 15.6 percent of the working people.
• The study was conducted in December 2008- January 2008.
• In the public sector, the number of employees is estimated at one million and 603,994.
