Moroccan Prime Minister Benkirane: “Algerians are our brothers. We love them… »
“In Morocco, we have a common belief: one can choose his friends, but one cannot choose his brothers”. It is with these words that the Moroccan Prime Minister, Abdelilah Benkirane, began to mention, on Tuesday, May 5th, the tricky relationship between Algeria and his country, Morocco.
«The Algerians are our brothers. We love them and we think that it is reciprocal,” said the Moroccan Prime Minister, who was speaking on the subject during a question-and-answer session at the forum of the Al Jazeera channel in Doha (Qatar).
“There is a misunderstanding with our Algerian brothers that has lasted from 1963 until today. We’ve tried and we will continue to endeavour through dialogue to find solutions… We are optimistic of ushering in a brighter relationship with Algeria despite the current difficulties,” Mr Benkirane underscored.
“We’re far from living the same situation that have both witnessed Germany and France in their former relationship,” added the Moroccan Premier.
He concluded by saying: “despite everything, the difficulties are
genuine. We are striving to overcome these hurdles and we’re open to any proposal to find an adequate solution to this intricate problem”.
