Morocco Implicated 100,000 Algerians In Drug Smuggling In 10 years

Latest report by the National Gendarmerie leadership shows that Morocco dumped Algeria by more than 800 tons of drugs and implicated more than 100.000 Algerians in drugs’ smuggling and trade, during the last decade, and made Algeria not only a transit country but a consumer that included even hard drugs, like cocaine and heroin.

Consequently, the gendarmerie leadership adopted, following the instructions of the Major General, Mennad Nouba, a new strategy to combat the phenomenon of drug trafficking which is introduced from the western border of the country, through developing and modernizing the potential of the gendarmerie plans, as it was decided to support and tighten the security at the border through coordination and cooperation with various units of the National People’s Army and other security services.

In addition to that, in the framework of trapping the drug mafia, the “Lalla Maghnia” plan was applied to tighten control on the smugglers who are active across the 45 border villages with Morocco that are known for smuggling, and the expansion and deepening of the trenches, as a national card that contain the data bank about the identity of the smugglers, and the unprecedented in the drug smuggling and the quality of vehicles that are used for this purpose, and phone numbers of people who are implicated in the trading and smuggling of these toxins, along with intensifying the control on the border with the coordination of security services.

In terms of numbers, as revealed by Major. Abdelmalek Derradji, representative of the National Gendarmerie, on Wednesday, during the National Forum on “Drugs and Addiction”, which was organized by the Second Regional Command of the National Gendarmerie in coordination with the University of Oran 1 and 2, as it registered 76.319 cases that resulted in the arrest of 96,684 people, and 27.35% of the total cases that are related to drugs, and 916 investigations on drug trafficking and smuggling were opened at the national level during the four months of the current year. In contrast, the recent years noticed a large increase in the rate of the seized drugs especially cannabis, and the gendarmerie services seized each month, and over the last 3 years, 7.7 tonnes which makes Algeria not only a transit country but also a consumer for the various types of drugs, even the hard ones like cocaine and heroin.
