Morocco is trying to spread allegations that the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic would be “kicked out” from the African Union soon. This shows that Rabat’s positions are still “very hostile” toward Algiers.

Morocco’s foreign minister Salaheddine Mezouar said the Republic’s illusionary presence in the African Union is a question of time. No one believes that it will have a future, he said in response to remarks made by Algerian officials.

Earlier, Algeria’s Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra and Maghrebin affairs minister Abdelkader Messahel said the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic will “indisputably” remain as a member in the African Union. This is due to many considerations including the fact that Western Sahara is a founding member.

Following a weekly meeting held by Morocco’s cabinet, Mezouar started spreading rumors that 28 African nations called for “kicking out” Western Sahara from the African Union.

“We respected all the opinions because the African nations are tired of the absence of Morocco,” he said.

Advisor minister at the Sahrawi President’s Office Lahcene Hartine denied those allegations.
