Mourad Medelci: “Algeria doesn't reply to provocation from Morocco and is opposed to foreign interference in Sahel region”

Algerian foreign affairs minister, Mourad Medelci, has described the current security situation in the Sahel region as “preoccupying” and expressed Algeria's opposition to any foreign military interference in the region.


  • Speaking Thursday on Channel 3 of the National Radio, Mourad Medelci said that the Sahel countries could manage their own affairs notably in the sustained fight against the terrorism scourge through a coordinated and common strategy without untoward foreign meddling.

  • He however did not rule out the possibility of  fruitful cooperation with other countries from the northern hemisphere but repeated Algeria’s firm opposition to the deployment of foreign troops in the Sahel as highly detrimental to the sovereignty and interests of the countries of the whole region.

  • On another topical file dealing with Algerian-Moroccan relations, Medelci said that Algeria “does not respond to provocation” and doesn’t not react outside the institutions in charge of managing its relations with neighboring countries, particularly with Morocco”.

  • “The Algerian diplomacy does not react outside the institutions that are accountable for managing its relations with neighbors, with Morocco in particular,” said Medelci referring in this connection to the recent  hostile demonstrations on the Moroccan border with Algeria.

  •  “We have in Algeria a situation of great serenity regarding the Western Sahara issue involving the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, because we overtly uphold the Sahrawi people’s legitimate right to self-determination in line with UN resolutions and international legality as we defended likewise as a matter of principle several years ago East-Timor’s drive for independence, ” he explained.

  • At the Arab level, Medelci announced that Chad was poised to become shortly a new fully-fledged member of the Arab League stressing that the adhesion procedure for that country was going on smoothly.
