MPs Approve the Draft Amending the Algerian Nationality Law
Members of the National People’s Assembly approved, on Wednesday, the draft of a comprehensive amendment to the Algerian Nationality Law.
The law was ratified in a public session chaired by Ibrahim Boughali, chairman of the National People’s Assembly, in the presence of the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Ms Nadjiba Djilali, and members of the government.
This text aims to align the legal framework governing nationality with the provisions of the Constitution and relevant international obligations, particularly concerning cases of deprivation of nationality.
According to the text, deprivation of Algerian nationality is an exceptional legal measure to be applied in rare and established cases involving deliberate harm to the supreme interests of the nation.
This law also defines the serious acts that warrant disqualification, such as harming the security and unity of the state, showing loyalty to a foreign state while renouncing loyalty to Algeria, dealing with hostile entities, or joining, financing, or promoting terrorist or subversive groups to the detriment of the interests of the state.
