Naval forces meet to map out security plan for combating terrorism in Algeria

Officials at the naval command of the second military region in Oran, west of Algeria, held last weekend a broad-based meeting bringing together commanders of the coast guards and officials of the western seafronts in order to examine the security scheme to combat the smuggling of explosives from Bouzejar port in Ain Temouchent, towards Zemouri port in Boumerdes, east of Algiers, to check the supplies in explosive devices to the Salafist Group GSPC also known as Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, which now suffers from a lack of explosive belts and traditional bombs.

  • Echorouk quoted sources close to the meeting, as saying that  instructions to tighten control on the borders along the Algerian coastline were given in addition to strengthening the presence of the coast guards at sea.
  • The same sources said instructions by the commanders of army were given to insure security of the coasts and territorial waters of Algeria as well as taking the preventive and proactive actions to control and thwart the smuggling operations and intensify the inspection of ships and boats by the border guards in the various ports and western coasts.
  • “Combating terrorism is part of the naval forces units’ action plan at sea”, one security official said.
