No illegal immigration reports in Algeria since play-off

Algerian coast guards in did not report any illegal immigration attempts since the World Cup play-off between Algeria and Egypt in Sudan as people are busy with the World Cup event.

• A wave of illegal immigration started immediately after Algeria lost the November 14 qualifying match against Egypt. Tens of people were arrested trying to smuggle themselves while some of them were saved from death.

• The wave stopped when Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika decided to take 9,000 fans to Sudan to watch the play-off.

• Illegal immigration mafia used to seize the opportunity of big events to organise the biggest trips but they have postponed all their plans until the end of the World Cup event.

• Former illegal immigrants say they are waiting for a similar decision to go to Angola for the African Cup and South Africa for the World Cup.

• Football appears to change the illegal immigrants’ destination to the south after they used to head for the north. This time, the destination is South Africa.
