Novelist Assia Djebar has no identity, says Boudjedra

Algerian novelist Rachid Boudjedra said he does not consider writer Assia Djebar as Algerian “because she drown in Europe’s community and her novels have no nationality.”

  • “Fifteen years ago, she was nominated for a Nobel Prize but she did not get it,” Boudjedra told Echorouk on the phone Saturday.
  • He believes that ideology and politics dominate the Nobel Prize and Arab names nomination is no more than a camouflage attempt.
  • “No Arab writer will be awarded of a Nobel Prize after Nadjib Mahfoud who supported President Sadat’s Camp David peace treaty with Israel in 1978.”
  • “The only remaining possibility is to witness another event like Camp David which would be supported by another Arab personality. At that time, he may be awarded.”
