Only 4.90% of Algerians have air-conditioners at homes
Algeria’s imports from air-conditioners has increased considerably during the first four months of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008, statistics by the National Centre of Information and Statistics at the Customs show.
-
The number of the imported air-conditioners reached, during the first four months of 2008 one million and 577.000 and 67, while it increased during the first four months of 2009 to one million and 601.000 and 244 air-conditioners in order to cope with the extreme heat in summer, for a total amount of $76 million and 81.000 and 994, the equivalent of 60 billion dinars.

The total volume of containers filled with air-conditioners that were unloaded at the Algerian ports reached 16.000 and 322 tons, compared to 13.000 and 54 tons in 2008, and 12.000 and 131 tons in 2007. This may explain the rise in imports of air conditioners to meet the Algerians’ demand, without calculation of the local production which is less expensive compared with what is being imported, as there are over 15 Algerian companies that produce the air-conditioners.

Despite all that, the number of Algerian families which have air-conditioners at home represents only 4.90% according to a study by Echorouk prepared by Media Sens office on 2000 Algerian families, only 98 families said they have air-conditioners at their houses.

Statistics by the National Centre of Statistics show that the number of the air-conditioners that have been imported by Algeria in 2008 reached 2 million and 897.000 and 665 air-conditioners, compared to 2 million and 735.000 and 826 air-conditioners in 2007, with an increase of 100.000 air-conditioners, reflecting the rise in the need to use air-conditioners to the Algerian families to cope with the hot air inside the houses, particularly at night, to the extent that wealthy families put air-conditioners in every room and even in the kitchen, and put four in the living room.
