Chairman of the National Commission for the Promotion of Health and the Development of Research “Foram”, Professor Moustafa Khayati, warned of rotten food that are imported from abroad, and which are not subject to quality and quantity control, and considered it a real threat to the health of citizens, and the main reason for the spread of many dangerous diseases, notably cancer.

Professor Khayati added, on Tuesday, while being the guest of “Forum” at the national radio, that Algeria imports 15,000 food products from abroad that are not all conform to international standards in terms of quality and the preservation of health and is difficult to control, and 30% of them represent a clear threat to the consumer’s health, i.e. equivalent to 4,500 food products which does not meet the standards, which calls for interference by the authorities to enforce the protection and control of staff that citizens consume.

“What is currently consumed by the Algerians is poison. Algeria imported 50,000 tons of food that expired during the past year, warning of food additives that enter in the food industry, which increase the likelihood of developing cancer, which justifies the high incidence of many diseases such as cancer, as recorded 45.000 cases of cancer each year. Random food consumption is behind the spread of chronic diseases among the diabetes, heart disease, and the prevalence of dental caries.

“Soft drinks and juices are a real threat to the health of citizens due to its high sugar content and because Algerian citizen consumed it in very large quantities. Algeria imported huge quantities of sugar, which makes the Algerian citizen consume sugar with considerable quantities compared to its neighbors in Morocco and many other countries.”
