Over one million Algerians visited Tunisia in 2014
Tunisia remains the first destination for Algerian tourists, according to statistics provided by the Tunisian Tourism Office.
Tunisia received 5.9 million tourists from January to December 2014, a drop of 2.8% in comparison to the same period of 2013 and of 12% with 2010, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.
The year of 2010 is used as reference since it was a record-breaking period for the sector and also preceded the so-called Arab Spring, in 2011, which affected and continues to influence the region’s activities.
Maghreb’s tourists amounted to 50.5% of the total, but the number of people from the neighboring countries that came to Tunisia dropped 3.5% in comparison to 2013. It was almost 30 million visitors, a 6.2% increase over 2010.
The Maghreb includes Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Mauritania. The Libyans were the main visitors, followed by the Algerians. The number of Libyans, however, dropped, while of Algerians went up over 2013.
According to recent statistics, over one million Algerians entered Tunisian soil in the year 2014 mostly for tourism purposes.
They were (Algerians) 952.000 to have visited Tunisia in the previous year of 2013.
Europeans were 46.9% of tourists total with 2.77 million people. There was a 2.9% drop over 2013 and of 26.1% in comparison to 2010. The French top the list, followed by Germans and the British. Tunisia received fewer French visitors in 2013, while the number of Germans and British tourists increased.
The sector’s revenue, according to the Tunisian Ministry of Tourism, amount to 3.476 billion dinars (US$ 1.836 billion), an increase of 10.2% over the same period in 2014 and of 1.6% over the 2010 reference year.
