Party leader Abdellah djabellah talks to Echourouk
In a wide winding interview with Echourouk, the leader of “ Il Islah†movement , Abdelah Djabelleh has indicated that the series of political consultations initiated by the Committee led by Ben Salah was a means “to gain time by the regimeâ€.

He dwelt on various issues including the events that jolted the Arab nations in what is called the “ Arab spring” slashing at the NATO as well as the Libyan ruler Moaamer El Qaddafi.
-
-
Echourouk: The rounds of consultations initiated by the pres. Bouteflika have wrapped up, do you consider that they have reached the objectives they were meant for?
-
-
Djabellah: They have maybe fulfilled the regime’s objectives since it works for staying in power as longer as possible. From this point of view, we can say the consultations were successful otherwise; they didn’t live up to the opposition’s expectations neither worked for the country’s welfare.
-
-
Echourouk:You were among the personalities, who boycotted the consultations why haven’t you followed Mehri’s example who took part and but told the authorities that they were wrong?
-
-
Djabellah:I owe respect to this historical figure but we had a lot of experiences with the regime in the past in this field that unfortunately felt short… Secondly, this committee was not designed to conduct dialogues with the opposition but rather to collect views and compile them. As I’m concerned, I have sent a letter in which I displayed my opinions and said that the procedure was wrong and doesn’t live up to the Algerian people’s expectations.
-
-
Echourouk: There others who criticize the authorities’ initiative arguing that the problem doesn’t lie in the legislation but the laws’ enforcement, do you agree with that?
-
-
Djabellah: I was the first one to call for voting “ NO” for the 1996 constitution because it was an impediment for a real democracy. We have declared then that this constitution was giving the president full power on the Judicial , Legislative and Executive branches and dwelt on the matter with the president Zeroual but they didn’t take into consideration our observations.
-
-
Echourouk:: Do you think that the latest Arab unrests will urge the Arab rulers to abide by the laws?
-
-
Djabellah: The Arab revolutions reflect their peoples’ awareness and the proof is that life is going on despite the upheavals. These revolutions were meant to depose the despots and build democracies, Algeria has always been in the vanguard and history can testify this.
