The Minister of Solidarity, Family and the Algerian community abroad, Djamel Oueld Abbas, said that the volume of poverty in Algeria reached 4.9% in 2009, surpassing a large number of the European countries like Denmark, Spain and France, in which the poverty rate reached 12%.

• “Algeria reached its goals in the fight against poverty with a decrease of 150% in nine years with a total estimated to 1.7 million poorest”, he says.

• “Algeria won the challenge of fighting poverty thanks to the social aid and transfers which reached 700.000 billion dinars, the equivalent of 12% of the state budget, as well as the establishment of 200 cells of social assistance in 48 localities”.

• “Government aims to reduce poverty by 2% in 2015 through the maintenance of the social assistance and reduction of unemployment which reached 11% in 2008”.
