Poverty in Algeria reaches 4.9%: Oueld Abbas

The Minister of Solidarity, Family and the Algerian community abroad, Djamel Oueld Abbas, said that the volume of poverty in Algeria reached 4.9% in 2009, surpassing a large number of the European countries like Denmark, Spain and France, in which the poverty rate reached 12%.

“Algeria reached its goals in the fight against poverty with a decrease of 150% in nine years with a total estimated to 1.7 million poorest”, he says.

“Algeria won the challenge of fighting poverty thanks to the social aid and transfers which reached 700.000 billion dinars, the equivalent of 12% of the state budget, as well as the establishment of 200 cells of social assistance in 48 localities”.

“Government aims to reduce poverty by 2% in 2015 through the maintenance of the social assistance and reduction of unemployment which reached 11% in 2008”.
