Minister of Interior, Dahou Ould Kablia, vowed to fire prefects if they would be involved in the fraud of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Mr Ould Kablia warned that the fraud involved prefects (province governor) would not be fired only, but also would be sent to custody, saying in a statement to Alger Channel III radio that such a sanction should contribute in the neutrality of the administration.

The official further reassured the potential candidates to get copies of the voting records, but he admitted that that some practices that might not please to candidates are expected to occur.

The minister further expressed fears that the lowest ever turnout of parliamentary elections of 2007 would be remade in 2012 rendezvous.

“I’m haunted by the fear of a low turnout in next elections, as parliamentary elections’ turnout is usually lower than local elections.”

In 2007 parliamentary election, the turnout was estimated at 35 percent, the lowest ever. Some parties called to cancel the result, given that 35 percent turnout is far from making the parliament a representative institution to the 35 million nation.

Elsewhere, Mr Ould Kablia has ruled out the win of Islamists, despite increasing analysis expecting that the Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt’ Islamist landslide win scenario could be remade in Algeria. He explained that “I think Algeria differs from the countries of the region, as she has her own social specificities and values,” saying “finally, it is for the people to choose.”
