Religious affairs minister
The religious affairs ministry sent a directive to its departments in the different provinces across the country warning the “Imams†(preachers) against any form of activities inside the mosques apart from the daily prayers or worshipping.

This decision comes against the backdrop of intense electoral campaigns initiated by candidates and political parties pending the elections to appoint new senators in the upper house of the Algerian parliament.

The warning is essentially addressed to people who have no link with the religious affairs ministry but are allowed to some activities inside the mosques, including teachers affiliated to the National Office of Illiteracy who use these locations to teach reading ad writing for adult illiterates.

The religious affairs ministry warns those teachers, who use the mosques as a location for their activities, against any form of propaganda and abide by the conditions set by the religious authorities.
-
-
They have to limit their activities to teaching and writing to a special category of people as it is stipulated in the permit issued by the ministry, it said. A copy of this permit is sent to the province’s governor who supervises the teacher’s activities.
