Report: Over 14 million Algerians suffer from poverty
Report that was issued by the Algerian League for Human Rights Defense shows that the number of Algerians who are living under the poverty line jumped from 10 million to 14 million, which represent 35% of Algerians whose social situation deteriorated and become unable to acquire the basic needs of life.
ALHRD criticized, in its new report, the continuing rise in the poverty rate in Algeria, which reached 35%, after it was 24% in 2014.
Same report shows that 80% of the country’s wealth is seized by 10% of Algerians, while 90% of them live in poverty, including 40% who live abject poverty. A situation which was described by the league as “very worrying” what makes a deeper gap between the strata of society.
ALHRD indicated in its report for the year 2014, that over 1,932,000 Algerian families are living below the poverty line, with an increase of 304 families compared to 2013.
“More than 1,300 poor municipalities are living on subsidies of the local groups fund, including 800 municipalities that ranked among the poorest, containing 20 million inhabitants, who benefit from additional aid, and 30 provinces rely on providing the needs of citizens and conducting of daily affairs on this the fund, which reduces that disparities that are resulting from the weakness of fiscal resources.”
It is known that since 1992 the United Nations officially announced that October 17 will be the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and got a slogan by the International non-governmental organizations including the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights.
On this occasion, the Algerian League for the Human Rights Defense, believes that the images of poverty in the Algerian society is reflected by the deterioration of the living standards, poor health services, unemployment and the growing number of citizens who want to leave the country at any cost, and the spread of the phenomenon of begging, street children, prostitution, child labor and the spread of chaotic neighborhoods in the form of tin huts.
