Sarkozy Defends the Moroccan Occupation, Attacks Algerian Closed Borders
Former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, attacked Algeria again, but this time through using the card of Western Sahara and the borders that are closed with Morocco.
“Algerians are my friends and I would not like to say something that would cause controversy”.
Founder of the Republican Party announced his extreme hostility against Sahrawis when he claimed that “Western Sahara is a Moroccan land”, as this was adopted by the Moroccan regime s well.
Sarkozy said, in response to a question at a lecture, which he made in Abu Dhabi, in the week end, regarding the efforts of France to find a settlement to the Sahara issue; “I visited Laayoune for the first time in 1991, not yesterday, and it will be hard to convince me of the need to establish a Sahrawi Republic in the region of terrorism, where Niger and the Sahel and Mali”.
Sarkozy did not hesitate to contradict the principles of international law and the United Nations’ regulations, which allow the people to choose its ruling style.
In a clear violation of the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and its independence, Sarkozy said; “I reject the establishment of a state in the desert … France has always supported a Moroccan Desert” (..), and he also mentioned, during the lecture that was organized by the Emirates’ Center for Strategic Studies and Research, on the Sahara issue that; “Western Sahara case is the main reason behind closing the border between Morocco and Algeria”.
In Sarkozy’s remarks there is a great fallacy, because the Western Sahara issue started since a full decade of closing the land border between the two countries, which is caused by unfounded accusations that were launched by Morocco against Algeria, after a terrorist attack that targeted a hotel in the city of Marrakech, while Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara is back to 1975.
Concerning the Moroccan-Algerian relationships, Sarkozy said that the border closure is hampering the goals of the “Union for the Mediterranean”, referring to the size of the possibilities that are available to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, to create a model space, but “Sarko” did not talk about the reason which is his attempt to engage the Zionists in the Mediterranean Union, which is rejected by Algeria in toto, as Sarkozy is known for being a large pro-Zionists, and therefore he pre-empted the Algerians’ reaction, and asserted; “I love Algeria so much, and I will not say anything that may cause controversy.”
