Security expert: Algeria won its combat against the all-out terrorism

The former colonel in the national Popular Army and current university teacher the Professor Ahmed Adhimi considers that the national reconciliation process has shrank the terrorists’ operating zones to very limited areas facilitating the task of the security forces.
He added that the terrorists have desperately resorted to change their strategy using suicide attacks in a bid to kill the maximum of civilians with the least cost, achieving thus large media uproar and reaffirming that terrorism is not over in Algeria. -

Q: As a security expert and former army officer, how do you evaluate the operations carried out by the national popular army and the elimination of several ring leaders?

A: I think that the results registered across this period in the fight against terrorism are a logical outcome to a relentless fight carried out by the security forces to eradicate this phenomenon. It is known worldwide that the most difficulty war is that one waged against terrorism because the enemy is hidden seizing the least opportunity to commit his heinous act.

The national reconciliation process has laid a discredit on the terrorist organizations and stripped them f their legitimacy, on the other hand Algeria has taken over the phase called “The overall Terrorism” where the criminals were hitting everywhere at any time.

Q: Several experts agree that the so called “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” which stems from the Salafit Group for Preaching and call didn’t take advantage from its new appellation, what do you think?

A: I would prefer to talk about Al Qaeda… This organization that has been created to serve the US interests will not be left on its own in nature after completing its mission in Afghanistan and Iraq. To come back to your question, nothing will change as concerns these organizations whether they operate within Al Qaeda or on their own, the best advantage they can draw from joining Al Qaeda is to use their means of communication( internet, and the network of media professionals on the TV Channels that show interest on their criminal acts in Algeria.

Q: The terrorist organization led by Droudkel is now resorting to kidnap foreigners and demand huge ransoms in return to release them in a bid to collect finance their activities after drying up other financing sources, what would be the best means to face up to this new strategy?

A: I don’t think that it has to do with money, by abducting foreign nationals, the terrorists aim at showing to the world that the country where the kidnapping took place is unable to guarantee security for those people, giving an alibi for the western counties to intervene in order to protect their citizens. The process starts with the request of military facilities and ends up with the establishment of military bases in the given country.

Q: We talk about “terrorism residue”, but by contrast the acts are bloodiest, what’s your analysis?

- A: If we look back, one can say that terrorism has no future in Algeria. Nations hit by this phenomenon do not recover easily; some terrorist acts carry on for long years taking several forms. Terrorism is like a snake whenever you cut a part of its body there is another one to replace it. So one living terrorist in Algeria will give birth to scores that’s why I told you earlier that we are not completely safe
