Security report: 467 breach of trust cases recorded over past 3 years in Algeria

A Security report by the gendarmerie media cell on cases about breach of trust, available to Echorouk, shows that most of the involved in this kind of criminality are 41 year-old self-employed people, as well as businesswomen who imported clothes and women who are owners of hairdresser's shops, cosmetics salons and real estate agencies as well as public workers including employees in the post offices who embezzled money of the retirees pensions and immigrants, several young people under 18 are involved as well.

  • The report also reveals that the national gendarmerie addressed 11 cases of breach of trust over the past two months, resulting in the arrest of 11 people mostly aged between 32 and 40 years old, notably two women and two minors, as well as two employees, leaving six victims including two women.
  • Breaches of trust witnessed a considerable spread in the big cities, according to the number of cases recorded in the last three years, where various units of national gendarmerie addressed 184 cases of breach of trust in 2006 resulting in the arrest of 206 people including 202 males and 4 females, 148 were jailed after standing trial.
  • The number of cases reached 163  in 2007 with 158 people being arrested including 3 females. In 2008 there were 120 cases, but most of those arrested were 41 year-old businessmen.
  • Under the Algerian law, breach of trust is the terminology used when a person is placed in a position where he should be acting properly and in a responsibe way  with the things placed in his charge and he takes advantage of the situation to cheat his employer. If an accountant uses his position to cheat his employer, then the offence is viewed very seriously, as it is both regarded as theft and a breach of trust.
