Smoking to kill 520 million smokers by 2050, Doctors warn

Dr. Kamel Ben Abdennabi, cardiologist and specialised in treating smoking, and head of Leopold Blanc hospital in Paris said half of the smokers die due to an illness related to the deleterious effects of smoking.

  • “Smokers die prematurely and lose 14 years of their lives”, he says.
  • The speaker featured, during a meeting, last Thursday at Sheraton hotel in Algiers, on how to help the smoker to give up this addiction which caused dangerous diseases including, the aging of skin, sexual impotence, lung cancer, clogging of the heart arteries, difficulty of pregnancy in women who smoke and birth defects, as well as the high suicide rate at this category, describing smoking as the slow death.
  • Indirect smoking also caused, according to him, a risk by 30%, and the expenses which are spent on cigarettes reach more than 70.000 dinars per year causing a problem for the low-income owners.
  • The doctor warned of the serious consequences of smoking, pointing to the statistics of the WHO which expects the number of deaths caused by smoking to reach 520 million people by 2050.
  • As for treatment, the specialists focused on the need to prepare an environment of trust between the specialised and the addicted, and provide methods to be followed without being forced, as well as changing the behaviour and follow a psychological way that motivate the addicted to take the final decision to give up smoking.
