The steep upward trend of the Euro exchange rate at the informal market, which has exceeded the threshold of 21,400 Dinars for 100 Euros, is deeply affecting scores of sick patients, who are engulfed in an endless cycle of trouble and health complications, after having received months ago, medical appointments to perform intractable surgical operations in hospitals of some foreign countries.
In the face of this adverse situation, the latter were unable to travel to these countries, having been unable to provide the cost of medical treatment or surgery in hard currency, after the stiff devaluation of the Algerian Dinar and the record rise in the Euro exchange rate.
Many patients have confirmed that they have arranged all the administrative procedures for travel for a while now and have steadily endeavored in all directions by linking up with charities and philanthropists in order to collect the huge sums required by foreign hospitals.
However, over the course of the days, they were flabbergasted by the high exchange rate reached by the Euro in the black market, which is the only way to change the national currency (DA), in the absence of approved currency exchange offices in Algeria, as well as owing to the low value of the yearly tourist grant, which now doesn’t exceed officially 115 Euros, or the equivalent of 15,350 Dinars in Algerian banks.
As a case in point, a patient suffering from paralysis requiring a spinal cord transplant in China, said he had waited for three full years to raise one billion centimes in Dinars, with the help of well-meaning benefactors, so as to pay for heavy surgery at a Chinese hospital, but when he tried to convert the amount collected in Algerian Dinars over the course of several months, he was surprised to find out that this sum represents only a small amount in hard currency, after the collapse of the Algerian Dinar exchange rate and the record hike in the exchange rate of the Euro within a very short time, and this mishap steeped him into a spiral of a severe psychological distress.
Moreover, numerous other hapless patients who have been unable to travel overseas for crucial medical treatment due to their inability to muster the required financial amounts in hard currency, are now woefully facing acute health complications that may jeopardize the fate of their lives.
