‘’The government has decided to ban used clothes imports to protect the national textile industry to which the state had allotted huge investment packages.’’ It is with these words that the Algerian Finance Minister responded to opponents to the government’s move. ‮”.‬‭ ‬

The used clothes imports created real polemics during the last two months when Mr. Ouyahia’s government distributed its executive signed-off draft finance law. MPs belonging to the second house of parliament had heated debates over the draft law.

Senator Abdelkader Gaci for instance raised questions in parliament plenary sessions to doubt about the reasons behind the government’s push for a ban on the activity. Senator Gaci had a pertinent question to the finance minister asking him to check his view of having old clothes with ‘’diseases’’ that are dangerous for kids especially.

The senator had a question on the motives that pushed the executive on route to a ban on the activity. Mr. Gaci said ‘’we need to have an expertise on Mr. Djoudi’s argument concerning the health risk of the clothes’’. Mr Gaci also added ‘’Why didn’t they ban imports on some Chinese clothes and shoes that pose real threats on human health’’ said Mr. Gaci.
