The WB Says Algeria A Model Country In Water Resources Management

A representative of the World Bank, Bekele Debele Negwo said on Tuesday that Algeria stands to be “a model country” in the MENA region in terms of the rational management of water resources.

Speaking at a workshop held in Algiers on “Water prospects in MENA region, link between desalination and renewable energies”, the WB representative underlined that Algeria has adopted a balanced policy for the mobilization and diversification of water resources, at a time when many countries of the region are facing serious difficulties in supplying their populations with drinking water.

However, the WB official raised concerns over the enduring shortage of water resources in the MENA region, due to the slump of rainfall quantities and the overexploitation of water there.

He said the MENA region is becoming a dehydrated, as water resources dropped by 75 percent during the last six decades, while the rainfalls are expected to shrink by 20 percent as by 2050.

Mr Bekele Debele further recommended Algeria to spend $ 83 million per year until 2050, in order to guarantee balanced and enough water offer for all the population.
