Top official fixes a row between inhabitants and their mayor

The Committee of elders along with parents’ children association of the town of “ Al Atf” , Ghardaia (western Algeria) yesterday announced the halt of their strike and freeze their decision to boycott courses after reaching a compromise with high-level officials in the government.

• The chairman of the National Popular Assembly (the lower chamber of the Algerian parliament) Abdelaziz Ziari promised them to handle their problems in the wake of the conflict that broke out between them and the province’s mayor, Yahia Fahim, concerning the use of the high school “Abi Abdellah Al Ferstani” damaged by last year’s floods.

• For security reasons, the mayor decided to transfer the 480 high school from the flood-hit high school to a nearby educational institution whose capacity doesn’t exceed 600 students until the building of the new high school.

• The parents consider the fact to jam 1100 students in a building which cannot comprise more than 600 a threat over their children’s health, security and studies, while the existing high school is still fit to host the students for this year, arguing that the old building is surrounded by a four meter high wall and is far from the other side of river’s bank by 85 meters.
