Traffic accident kills seven east of Algiers
Seven people perished in a traffic accident as they were travelling on board of a bus at the highway of Thenia, Boumerdes, east of Algiers, coming from Batna and Khnchela, east of Algeria towards Algiers in order to support the Algerian squad in the match against Rwanda today.

The accident occurred Saturday at about 3:20 am, as the bus type “Mercedes” was coming from Batna towards Algiers, going too fast and carrying 60 passengers, mostly youngsters who were travelling to support the national squad today, however, the bus skidded from its way left and right and finally collided a big tree on the road side of the national highway n° 5 in Thenea, Boumerdes, east of Algiers, then fell in a river adjacent to a farm there, killing seven people including three women and four men, as well as 23 injured, five of them in dangerous health situation, who have been transferred to the hospital of Algiers and Tizi Ouzou, east of Algiers, in order to receive the necessary treatment.

Commandant assistant of the national gendarmerie of Souk Elhad, Abdelkrim Sakhri, who was in the scene at the time of the accident, said the bodies of the victims were difficultly recovered from under the bus, which was divided into two parts and skidded more than six meters from the National Highway n° 5 and 10 meters from the depth of the road, and thanks to the efforts of the security services and civil protection many lives have been saved.

Previously, eleven people were killed and 56 injured after the collision of two buses in area of Chehbounia in Medea (about 200 km south of Algiers), Algeria News Agency (APS) reported citing the civil protection.

A report by the civil protection directorate said causes behind these street accidents are lost of control over cars for 108 cases, speed 90 and codes violations 41.

The Emergency Services, DGPC, reported that 603 Algerians killed and 8.650 injured in traffic accidents since the beginning of 2008, adding that 6 people die everyday.

Accident prevention also calls for social awareness; to fight this tragedy. This can only be done if safety conditions are gathered and laws are respected.
