Algiers-Traffic accidents kill 3831 Algerians in 2001 bringing the toll up to 37.000 perished since 2001, Head of Roads’ Security at Algiers Directorate of Gendarmerie Units says.

Colonel Dhaoui described, during a press conference, the toll, caused by human factor with 81.32%, as dangerous, adding that 2011 noticed a significant increase of 28% in the number of accidents compared to 2010, despite the campaigns of awareness and punitive measures, including withdrawal of driving licenses, which reached 193 683 in 2011.

The outcome by the National Gendarmerie revealed that at least 25023 accidents left 44936 injuries, while in 2010 19402 accidents killed 2994 people and injured 26239 others.

Setif (east of Algeria) noticed the highest figure of traffic accidents with 5.37%, followed by Algiers with 4.64% then Oran (west of Algeria) with 4.29%.
