Traffickers smuggle Algerian dates and sell them at low prices on global market

Prices of dates are still fluctuating in the retail market reaching between 200 and 300 dinars per kilogram, as the good quality was also offered to consumers during the holy month Ramadan at 400 dianrs, and consumers have noticed the poor quality of the dates in general as high-quality “Nour” dates were virtually absent from the tables of the Algerian families.

  • The World Organization of Nutrition and Agriculture classified Tunisia at the top of the list of countries which produce this type of dates.
  • After two weeks of Ramadan, prices of dates remain high compared to the quality of the product in the markets, as the prices reach between 250 dianrs and 300 dianrs per kilogram, noting that “Nour” dates were entirely absent in these markets, as it is the best quality of dates.
  • Although the large production of dates in some regions such as Leghrous, Bordj Ben Azouz, Foughala, Biskra, Aouled Djelel, Eddousen, Dhamaa and Tougourt, east of Algeria, the Organization of Nutrition and Agriculture at the UN classified Tunisia on top of the list, as the first producer of “Nour” dates in its border regions with Algeria with 50% of the world production (1.3 million out of 4 million palm trees), as Algeria have 1 million palm trees, USA 250.000, and even Israel 50.000 palm trees presenting the remaining 50%.
