University students in a Rat-Race for the Master’s exams registrations

The Algerian universities and campuses yesterday closed the registrations for this year’s Master’s exams amid a large wave of protests among the candidates who didn’t succeed to register before the deadline due to their increasing number.

  •
  • Some students at the University of political science in Algiers were forced to wait till 2 pm in order to register, while many left with in tears because they failed to register.
  •
  • There are those who seized the opportunity of the presence of “Echourok” on spot to ask for a delay in order to register. A student in journalism has declared” I came yesterday at 9 O’clock and gave me a ticket bearing the number 209 and waited till 02pm”.
  •
  • The same disorder was seen at the University of Communication and Political Science where the working staff was overwhelmed by the number of students who flocked to register. The situation went out of control as skirmishes broke out between them, while a large number resorted to abandon on account of a great disorder.
  •
  • Students accuse teachers of manipulating the lists of successful candidates:
  •
  •  Away from estimates, most of the students consider that the successful candidates in the Master’s exams are not necessarily the best ones, but those who pay the most and posses power rather.
  •
  • A dean of one of the universities out of Algiers, who talked on the condition of anonymity, has indicated that some influential people do not hesitate to offer huge sums to favour their children or even themselves. For his part, the Coordinator of the Higher Education Council’s Teachers Abdelmalek Rahmani denied the existence of any proof as to the involvement of teachers in these practices.
  •
  • But the Independent Students Union Secretary General Secretary Ismail Medjahed considers the fact to limit the number of places to 10 or 15 a way to prepare the terrain for such illegal practices, but doesn’t certify the existence of manipulations in the lists of candidates.
  •
  • Estimates reveal that some 49 thousand candidates registered for the Master’s exams, most of them fresh university graduates.
