US State Department: “Bouteflika Was Elected In Transparency”

US State Department praises the political reforms that were adopted by Algeria, during the previous years, led by the constitutional amendment and the establishment of the Supreme Commission for Election Monitoring.

US State Department said in its report, on human rights in the world, that is published, on Friday in Washington, that the Republic of Algeria adopts plurality in which the president is elected through the people, and praised the new constitution in its article that was defined by the two presidential terms.

It also praised the establishment of the Supreme Commission for Election Monitoring, adding that it ensures the integrity and transparency of elections.

US State Department report said that the 2014 elections, in which Bouteflika won a fourth term, were “held in transparency”, depending on the observers from the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of the African Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

In the field of freedoms and preserving the safety of persons, the report said it registered the arbitrary and illegal killings or cases of enforced disappearances, during the previous year 2016.

“Freedom of media is enshrined in the new constitution, and the media have right to express freely, including criticism of the government”.

US report also praised the conditions of the prisoners and the treatment of African refugees, depending on the Red Cross reports.
