1 million Algerian disabled live in miserable conditions
The chairman of the association for disabled “ Atahadi†Bouzara Hamza has expressed concern over the precarious social conditions of this category of people in Algeria dubbing it as “ extremely backward†due to the suffering of more than a million handicapped in Algeria on daily basis, especially in terms of housing and allowance .
- He revealed, in this respect, that numerous disabled were thrown out from their public housing because their meagre allowance cannot cover the rent, worsening, thus, the living conditions of hundreds of families who comprise disabled members who are prone to vagrancy at any moment.
- M Bouzara has called on the relevant ministry to issue laws that spare the disabled beneficiaries from paying their rent as a solidarity gesture for their precarious conditions. He disdainfully criticized the insignificant monthly allowance granted to the disabled that doesn’t exceed 4000 Algerian Dinars saying “ How can a father, who owns no more than 4000 Algerian Dinars monthly to cover the needs of his disabled children, afford to pay the rent of his house?”
- In order to remedy this disastrous situation, M Bouzara has called for the increase f the allowance to 12000 Algerian Dinars to make at the level of the minimum guaranteed salary.
- He has also criticized the public companies that do not comply with the Algerian legislation that oblige them to recruit 1% of the disabled.
