10 temporary teachers wounded in sit-in

Ten temporary teachers were wounded Sunday in a clash with security forces and anti-riots police out of the President’s Office in Algiers.

  • About 1,000 teachers blocked the route and traffic was stopped in El Mouradia area where the President’s Office is based.
  •
  • This came as protesters had been told about a positive decision due to be made in the President’s Office. On the other hand, Secretary General of the education ministry called the protesters to inform them hat their situation had been settled.
  •
  • Representative of the National Council for Temporary Teachers Meriem Maarouf told Echorouk the decision was no more than a “manoeuvre meant to disperse the protesters.”
  •
  • “Secretary General still says the same thing about examinations and that they are implemented on everyone. He tried to convince us by contacting the director general of civil service who was dismissed,” she said.
  •
  • Secretary General told protesters a representing delegation of the Council will go to the civil service department to find a formula to help temporary teachers.
  •
  • “The demonstrators rejected that solution and said their sit-in would be open until their integration,” she added.
