20 million weapons circulate on Algeria-Libya borders

Revolutionaries in Libya and Islamic fighting groups have acquired more than 20 million of weapons since battles begun between anti-Gaddafi’s forces and his battalions on February 17th.

  • This large number of weapons has created serious problems in keeping watch on them and being sure that they are not with terrorist groups.

  • The arms anarchy causes a serious danger on the Algerian national and regional security.

  • Repentant terrorists said there were smuggling networks in Libya which provide terrorists through borders with weapons in return for money in the 1990’s.

  • Smuggling networks are the main supplier of armed groups in Algeria through the Libyan desert.

  • Two months ago, a former activist said he brought large quantities of ammunition from Libya in coordination with drug and weapons smuggling networks.

  • Those networks entered in a race to obtain weapons in Libya and sell them to terrorist groups.

  • Armed groups in Algeria may Touareg people to pass from Algeria to Libya, Niger and Mali. Gaddafi had warned over distributing arms to the different Libyan tribes.
