2010: Tragic year for the Algerian cultural scene

The Algerian culture was widely represented overseas over the year 2010, while many outstanding cultural figures have passed away.

  • This year witnessed the downfall of the Egyptian artists who took part to a large-scale smear campaign against Algeria in the wake of the disqualification of the Egyptian squad from the South African world cup competition by their Algerian counterparts.

  • Algeria mourns its philosophers, historians and writers

  • The year 2010 witnessed the departure of notorious cultural figures that set a new benchmark for generations to come, including the writer Tahar Ouatar who lost his battle to cancer leaving, thus a void in the Algerian culture.

  • The Algerian cultural scene has lost also one of the biggest thinkers after Ibn kheldoun in the person of Mohammed Arkoun who died in exile and buried there. The advocate of the universal thinking and moderate Islam was for years disputed by his fellow Algerian and foreign thinkers until his death.

  • The Algerian cinema has lost also few days ago the dean of the Algerian actresses  kelthoum who was the first Arab lady to walk on the red carpet in the prestigious Cannes film Festival. The “dame” of the Algerian theatre followed one of the pillars of the Algerian cinema Larbi Zekkal after a career that spanned 50 years.

  • Other musicians and singers passed away in 2010 including Abdelkader Guessoum, and the foreman of the group “Raina Rai”, Djillali Amarna who lost his battle to cancer.
