70% of Algerian convicts commit offences after serving their terms

250 thousand ex-convicts went to prison over the last four years, while 60% of them were put in twice 40% served three times, judicial sources have revealed to Echourok.

  • The same sources have indicated that 70% of the cases deal with the convicts who were pardoned by the President during the religious feats and the Independence Day but reoffend right after getting out of prison, proving that they cannot lead a normal life once in liberty.

  • The convicts, who most of them were, involved in various crimes, including theft, rape, physical assaults and many others take advantage of the situation and are aware that they can benefit from the presidential pardon as part of the his constitutional prerogatives.

  • Paradoxically, those who were put in prison for the first time and their cases are excluded from the presidential decree are simply counted out from this procedures although many of them hold degrees and showed an exemplary behaviour while serving their period n prison.

  • One of the families has revealed, in this respect, that their son was sentenced to five years on charges of drug dealing and went on various training courses in addition to his excellent behaviour but didn’t benefit from a any sentence reduce.

  • His mother quoted her son saying” Everything is over since the authorities are considering as a criminal and even  more dangerous than those who committed unforgiving crimes like murders but benefitted at last from the presidential pardon”.
