8,000 Algerian children said they were sexually assaulted

More than 8,000 Algerian children called green number 3033 to say they were sexually assaulted by their friends, neighbours and even brothers and parents, according to the Algerian Network to Defend Children’s Rights ‘Nada.’

  • “A considerable number of the calls was about sexual relations between cousins. Tens of children were psychologically and emotionally traumatised,” said the network’s president Abderrahmane Aaraar in a seminar held in Algiers on Thursday.
  •
  • Experts are concerned about this number and asked to create special courts for children and punish assaulters. Algerian official sources say the number of sexual assaults in 2010 was estimated at 1,359. Of them, 781 girls.
  •
  • A 10-year-old boy said he father assaulted him sexually. Because of that, he and his mother filled a lawsuit against the father. This child asked to punish assaulters.
  •
  • Experts came up with a unified project including associations and activists in childhood, women and human rights field.
